We emphasized the most important markers in foods, such as total carbohydrates, starches, fibers, animal or plant fats, and animal or plant proteins. Besides this, we highlighted all known poisons, which may harm dogs or cats. These data were collected from reliable sources, such as USDA (US Department of Agriculture) and similar institutions from several countries. Our recommendations are based on dietary needs of dogs and cats, as well as on the structure of the digestive systems of dogs and cats.
In spite of the long period of domestication, the cats still remain to be carnivores with almost unmodified digestive habits. The main dietary needs of cats remain to be animal proteins and animal fats. Cats can get some plant materials or carbohydrates from the stomach of killed pray, but such materials still have no dietary importance for the cat.
Proteins of animal origin originate from animals, not from soy, rice, or corn. Fats of animal origin originate from animal fats too, not from sunflower or hemp oils. Carnivores can’t survive on plant-originated proteins or fats. Widespread practices of adding big amounts of carbohydrates in cat food, alone with substitution of animal proteins and fats with plant proteins and fats are making a cat diet absolutely unhealthy. Altogether, such modern alteration of cat food is one of the main contributing factors to widespread obesity and numerous inflammatory diseases in domesticated cats.
